About Us

Founded in 1998, Swales & Willis specialises in academic book production.

We pride ourselves on providing high quality work with a fast turnaround. From our office in Exeter, Devon we work with companies and freelancers around the world.

The Swales & Willis team are all experienced project managers who come from backgrounds such as bookselling, editing, archaeology, PR, journalism, teaching, translation, politics and international relations.

Richard is the MD of Swales & Willis. Originally an archaeologist, he moved in to publishing in the 90s and worked as a production then commissioning editor in academic publishing before founding Swales & Willis.

Julie has worked as a journalist, a PR account manager, bookseller and marketing executive for an academic publisher. She is co-director of Swales & Willis. Her interests include horse-riding, exploring Dartmoor and, of course, reading.

Colin has been in the book industry for longer than he cares to remember. He became a freelance editor in 1992 and moved to Swales & Willis in 2000. A lover of film and music, he provides daily musical interludes and is never short of an anecdote.

Tamsin is a qualified translator and studied French, Italian and Chinese at university. Since joining the team in 2007 she has started learning Spanish and German. She is a keen cook, regularly testing new recipes on her colleagues.

Caroline joined the Swales & Willis team in 2008, after graduating from the University of Exeter with a degree in international relations. She enjoys dancing, occasional jogging and exploring the beautiful walks and scenery that Devon has to offer.

Tom joined the Swales & Willis team in 2014 and manages the company’s copy-editing team. He has worked in the publishing industry since 2010, when he graduated with a BA in English and German from The University of Exeter. Tom is an experienced writer and editor and has a passion for language and the written word. In his spare time he likes to keep fit by playing badminton, running and walking his Labrador on Dartmoor.

Lizzie began working as a freelance proofreader in 2012 while studying animal science at university and joined the Swales & Willis team in 2014. In her free time she enjoys horse-riding and looking after the family smallholding.

Rachel joined Swales & Willis in August 2014 after completing an English literature degree at the University of Exeter. As well as being a voracious reader, her hobbies include yoga, rock climbing, badminton and baking.

Julian graduated from the University of Exeter with an English literature degree in 2015. He joined Swales & Willis later that year, having  freelanced in book production while at university. In his free time he volunteers for local and national humanist groups, as well as reading and writing across a range of genres.

Laura joined Swales & Willis/Impress Books in 2015 after graduating with a degree in English from the University of Exeter. Living in Exeter, she spends her spare time trying out recipes on her housemate, playing netball and roaming over Dartmoor as much as she can.

George worked as a freelance proofreader and editor during his degree in English at the University of Exeter. He entered the publishing industry in 2015 and hasn’t looked back since, joining the team at Swales & Willis in 2016. He enjoys reading, technology, photography, coffee and playing guitar.

Megan joined the Swales & Willis team in 2016, having found that publishing books was just as interesting as reading them. With a history degree from Warwick University, she loves all things historical, exploring Devon’s nature and heritage and planning various travels (some accomplished and some only aspirational, for now).

Rosie has been working in publishing since 2009 after graduating from the University of Exeter, and joined Swales & Willis in 2017. She spends her free time playing korfball, writing and performing spoken word poetry, and finding new reads for her bookclub.

Davi joined Swales & Willis in 2014 while completing a Master’s in Creative Writing at the University of Exeter. In his free time he is always on the hunt for new stories, new discoveries and new experiences. He has been attempting to learn Spanish for years, without success.
